I am trying to start my family tree but cannot find a marriage certificate for my Grand Parents My mothers Side of the family. William Cranston Born 1884 Died 1958 Profession Coal Hewer & his wife Elizabeth Cranston (Nee Wilson) Born 1895 Died 1973 I don’t know where they were married or where they were born but had 3 Children. William Born I Think 12 May1914 Died 1999 Never Married – Frances Born 21 June 1918 died Jan 1985 Married Aleksander Ostrowski 24 August 1945 & My Mother Eleanor born 10/01/1920 & Married My Father Ernest Collins 19 December 1945. Died Jan 1970 (Grand Parents Lived Red Row, Stanley Co. Durham & Finally Joicey Terrace Oxhill, Stanley Co. Durham) (I think The Registries could be in Lanchester or Durham North Western) If anyone can help please Reply Thanks Malcolm

I think perhaps you should start looking at the Scottish Archives. Most Cranstons came from the Border region of Scotland and were descended from the Reivers . This is the most likely reason why yoou can t find certificates. Register House Edinburgh is run on a computerised system and ancestry quick and easy to trace with copies of certificates on the spot.
