Samuel DREW. Yes, one of the many of that name. I am looking for information about my Greatgrandfather's family. A quick summary of the (now amended) information that I have is as follows. (Thanks to GR people who contacted me about available census information.) He was born in Illogan, Cornwall in c.1845, the son of Edward G Drew and Elizabeth HOCKING. Edward G was described as a house carpenter. At the time of the census, an older brother of Edward was noted - John DREW, about one year older). Samuel married Jane HARRIS (also from Illogan) and migrated to the USA. Their first daughter, Mary Ellen, was born in Maine in 1867 (1870 census says Maine, 1880 census has been transcribed as Minn, which is understandable when you view the original handwriting). Elizabeth Jane was born in October 1869 in Iowa County, Wisconsin. Albert Edward was born in Chicago c.1873, and Frederick William was also born in Chicago, c.1875. Caroline Belle was born in Waukesha County, Wisconsin c. 1882. In about 1883, the family returned from Wisconsin to Redruth, then moved to Queensland in 1885 (on the 'Chyebassa' - Queensland Mail). My grandfather, Samuel John, was born in October 1887 in Shorncliffe, Queensland. The older Samuel died in 1907, Jane in 1912, Caroline Belle in 1915, Frederick William in 1946, Albert Edward in 1948, Mary Ellen in the early 1950's and Elizabeth Jane in 1957. Samuel John died in 1985. None of the surviving grandchildren of Samuel know of the siblings of Samuel Drew, and have no knowledge whatsoever of Edward G Drew. I am hoping that someone out there has some information, especially of descendants of John Drew of Illogan, Cornwall, apprentice carpenter in 1861. Thank you in advance. Update: I have now found out a lot more about this family, thanks to a contact though GR and a very important contact through another genealogy forum (British Genealogy Forums). Both contacts were third cousins, descendants of great-great uncle John Drew. Update 29 Sept 2006: I now have a whole range of contacts and info back to Robert Drew, b. 1655. Penzance/Paul/Mousehole area mostly, but spread out into the rest of Cornwall and beyond.
