It is believed the ELM tree was taken to the British Isles by the Romans, a similar tree is found in Italy and was used to support grape vines. In the area known as 'The Saints' or 'The Parishes' which is a triangle of villages surrounded by Halesworth and Bungay in Suffolk and Harleston in Norfolk, England there is a 'minster' a very old central church for the area in South ELMham. All the surrounding villages are named after their church and minster eg) St James South Elmham and St Peters South Elmham. The mythology is that the area was covered in ELM trees and our ancestors simply took the name and became ELMY's. There is another branch of our tree elmEy, which came from a simply spelling mistake by a clerk or vicar in the 19th century. The sadly departed Harold Elmey of Oxfordshire did a great job tracking his family and how it linked with our branch(es). |
