For some reason the Esqulant's of Stepney used the surname Mason in the 1901 census. Some of the children, like Frank, carried the name all their lives. Others like Alfred, who was born in 1905, and was my wife's grandfather, used Esqulant. If anyone can shed more light on how the name Mason came into being, I would be obliged. |
