According to P.Hanks and F.Hodges (both authorities on surnames) this name is found recorded in Scotland as being an altered form of a surname of uncertain origin, possibly an unidentified habitation name. The earliest known bearer of the name was William Galithli, who witnessed a charter at the beginning of the 13th century. Henry Gellatly, as illegitimate son of King William the Lion of Scotland, was the grandfather of Patric Galythly, one of the pretenders to the crown of Scotland in 1291. Motto: Hactenus Invictus (hitherto unconquered) Arms: Ermine issuing from an antique crown d'or a demi lion rampant with two tails gules holding in the dexter paw a thistle proper. Crest: A lion's head erased crowned with an antique crown d'or. |

Just seenyour message. Pretty sure the name Galletly is a corruption of "Golightly" - a messenger, someone fleet of foot. |
