My paternal grandfather, James Henry Harris, was the eldest of 22 (according to oral tradition) children of James and Emily Harris. At the time of the 1901 census the family was living at No. 2 Bridge Place, Southwark, London and seven children were listed: James (as above), Emily A., Sydsley H., Ethel M., Arthur W., Ernest J. and Lillian A. My grandfather married Mary Buckland in 1917 and they had two sons: James George (my father) and William Charles. Mary left James ( things must have been bad for it was a very unusual occurence in those days) and James died in 1920 during the great 'flu pandemic. There was little contact between Mary, her sons and the greater Harris tribe in the early years and it soon fizzled out. For obvious reasons the subject was rarely mentioned in my youth and my father and grandmother are now deceased. So by my reckoning there could be about 100 descendents from my paternal great grandparents of whom I know nothing. Does anyone out there recognise this bit of family history? If you do I would be pleased to hear from you. David Harris |
