the followig i have copied from don auckrams website it is worth reading, i also have a copy of his book. see: http://www.auckram.gq.nu/hockham_ancestry.htm Origin of the Hockham surname: Topographical, of Anglo Saxon origin with two possible meanings [1] homestead where hocks/mallows [hollyhocks] grow: Places found in Norfolk. [2] first element could also be the name of a Anglo Saxon homestead owner, such as, Hocca or Hucca. Sources: Basil Cottle, Dictionary of Surnames, Penguin Books Ltd, Harmondsworth: Second Edition 1987. Patrick Hanks & Flavia Hodges, A Dictionary of Surnames, Oxford University Press, Oxford: 1989. Kenneth Allen, Family Names in Australia and New Zealand, Kangaroo Press, Kenthurst NSW: 1990. My research into our Hockham ancestry is at best inconclusive, although I have established without doubt the parents of George Hockham/Auckram, his siblings, their families, and in some cases the one or two generations that followed. Beyond the parents of George my research is open to conjecture. The problem lies with Stephen Hockham, George’s father. He was married in 1789 in Chelsea, Middlesex, and died in 1821 in Wandsworth, Surrey, but I have failed to find a record of his birth or christening. Going by his burial record, he was born about the year 1757. There was a Hockham family living at Chelsea from the 1690s through to the 1780s who used St Luke’s Church for their christenings, marriages, and burials, the same church Stephen was married in. So from assumption I have linked Stephen Hockham with this family, going back another three generations to a Gilbert Hockham/Oakham. [see detials below] There was another Hockham family that was living at Horley, Surrey, on the Sussex border in the 1720s and 1730s, who appear to originate from Sussex. The head of this family was named Stephen Hockham. None of his sons were named Stephen and I’m not able to link them to our Stephen Hockham, but I haven’t ruled this family out. So until a record of our Stephen’s birth or christening is found we’ll never know for sure. Peter Hockham i have managed to link my family tree back to the same Stephen Hockham that Don has. If anybody can add to this info please let me know. At this stage i am stuck on the Hockham line and am now tracing other lines of my tree. Good luck and keep hunting
