I am led to believe that the name Hooper came from the people that used to make the iron hoops around the old oak barrels made by a Cooper. Does anyone know anything else about the origin of the name ?

Hoopers made the iron hoops around the circumference of wheels. A Cooper made the iron hoops around old oak barrels.

Coopers made barrels mainly from oak or chestnut. These were used by many industries including the brewing, pickling, and other sections of the food industry as well as for other liquids - tar, oils etc.
My understanding is the Hoopers made barrels especially for the cider industry. This would explain why there are relatively few Hoopers compared to Coopers and also why Hoopers largely seem to come from the West Country.
I believe that cartwheels were made by wheelwrights.
