I'm trying to find a record of John Hornsby of Little Ribson, Wetherby who married Ann ? from Sturton, York around 1850 - can anyone help?

Thank you very much for finding that out for me - I made the assumption that John Hornsby married locally so I am very grateful that you found out where he and his wife married.

Best wishes

That may not be the right one, as there is a John Hornsby c1827 Whitby with wife Hannah on the 1861 census.

Hello David thank you for getting in touch.

I mistakenly typed in Mary and the information I have is from the 1861 and 1881 Census. In the 1861 Census Ann was recorded as born in Little Ribson and in the 1881 Census she was recorded as being born in Sturton, York.

In 1851 Ann says she's from Knaresborough, if they did marry it must have been before 1850 as they had daughter Mary c1850.

Personally I would order one of the childrens birth certificates and find Anns maiden name from that.

Check out freeBMD for Hornsby in Wetherby & Knaresborough for family info.

I suppose you know that John was living next door to daughter Mary King nee Hornsby c1850 on the 1901 census.

Also check out IGI Batch Number: C012392 Hornsby parents John and Isabella.

Thank you for all that information - I've been looking all afternoon and not come close to anything that you have!

Does the children's birth certificate have the mother's maiden name on it?

I didn't know they lived next door to each other - so thank you too for that information.

Best wishes, Carol

In 1861 & 1871 he is living next door to a Robert Hornsby c1811 Arkendale who could be a possible relative or even an older brother.

From what I've seen I don't think mothers maiden name appeared on the index till after 1911 (ish).

IGI Batch Number: C012393 Hornsby father John has a few more possible siblings.

Batch Number: C012393 Smithson father Thomas may also have possibilities.

Just spent a happy hour looking at the IGI batches you suggested - thank you. Lots of info there and also spotted names that link up with another branch of the family so that is a real success.

Best wishes
