I am trying to find MARIA KEMP who was born in Leiston, Suffolk 1820. She was the illigitimate daughter of Sophia Kemp and Henry Brown (Sailor) and this couple were to marry later that same year and have a further 3 children in their Aldeburgh, Suffolk home. Henry Kemp died in 1830 and I would very much like to know if anyone has information regarding Maria Kemp after that date.
Thanks in advance for any help

Hi Stephanie,

Actually I had that bit but the problem I have is that Maria went into jail in 1844 after being found guilty of failing to disclose the birth of a female infant which was brought to light when the child was found dead and the coroner decided that it was manslaughter! she was found no guilty of that but got a year for the failing to disclose the birth bit - it was August 1843 so within the 1837 new rulings on births, deaths and stuff. Maria did her year in jail - hard labour!! - but then she vanishes and I can't find her. I've tried the Fredd BMD to see if she married after being discharged from Ipswich jail and tried various parish registers in Leiston - her birthplace - and Aldeburgh - where she lived with her mother Sophia - to no avail and wondered if anyone on the Kemp page had any idea as to where she went after 31/03/1845 when she was liberated. I must say she was lucky not to have been deported with the charge of manslaughter. Do you have any further thoughts please? All suggestions would be of help!

Thanks

Maggie
