Hi, I'm having great difficulty finding any reference to my great great grandad John C W Lapper's birth. I have searched the birth indexes and can't find anything. He was born around 1870 in London, son of Harriet and I think, John Lapper. I am not sure if they were married at the time. I can't find him on the 1871 census either but he is listed on the 1881 census as Jack Lapper age 12. By then Harriet was the head of house, they lived in Marylebone and there were another 4 children. If anyone has any ideas about how I could get more information, I'd be really grateful. Thanks, Kath.

I'm not really sure about that either. If I could find the family on the 1871 census, I might be able to find out if the father's name is John. The only John Lapper who died in that area between 1870 and 1881 was one who was born in 1819. The only John Lapper who was born in 1819 in that area was married to Harriet Bowley in 1878. That would mean John (1870) and 3 of his brothers and sisters were born before they got married which is a possibility. I think this John (1819) though had already been married and already had a son called John in 1843. This son didn't die. Would he have had 2 children named John? I can't work out why they're not on the census. I'm finding it quite confusing.

If Harriet & John were not married, they could be listed under Harriets name, in both birth reg and census.
