Julie Toolan(nee Martin) I am trying to find any information to my paternal Grandfather William Martin. He was born around 1875 and died in 1919 of the Asian Flu on board his ship. He had joined the Navy as a young man. He married my Grandmother Alice Kate Saggs-Known as Kate in the late 1890s:- 7 children William Edward born 1901, Arthur Robert 1913 & my father Frederick born 1918. There was 4 other boys who died in childhood. I know he had a brother George who I believe ran a pub near the old Dockyard in Portsmouth. I'm not sure where he was born. It could have been Portsmouth or Southampton. I have tried to find him on the 1881 census but not knowing his parents names it's difficult to pin any one of the many, many Williams' down. The 1901 census showed that Kate & baby William resided at 6 Road View Mile End Portsmouth.William must have been at sea. I do not know if there were any more siblings of my Grandfathers but I vaguely remember visiting an Great Uncle Jim &Aunt Florrie . I was under the impression that he had been adopted. If any one out there can shed any light on my relative I would be most grateful |
