Family of George Mason born in London 12 March 1810. Presumably eldest son of George Mason a 'landscape painter'. Mother Mary Ann. Young George became a seaman by profession. He engaged on the 'Vansittart' an 80 ton vessel bound from London to Hobart Town, Australia. With his close friend John Fleurty sailed from Sydney late 1837 for Kapiti Island Whaling Station New Zealand reaching it on Christmas Day that year & later sailing to Port Chalmers then to Akaroa arriving 4 January 1838. He lived in Banks Peninsula until his death in 1889, He married Elizabeth (Betsy) Rix daughter of Joshua Rix. Would be great to find out more about his parents & siblings. |
