Phil Report 28 Oct 2004 13:54

this is a work in progress. You should always verify everything for yourself. If any of this information sounds like your family , please contact me. James McAllister1- though it has not been proven yet, It is my belief that James is a son of Ananias McAllister- of Lovell, Me.. Other researchers share this belief and yet there are some who dispute it. James McAllister -est. birth date: abt. 1771-1772. He married Tryphena ? abt. 1792 or a little bit earlier. New Pennacook folks, page 139 notes that James McAllister family settled on a lot in the Red hill area of Rumford before 1792. He died on May 25 1801 before any cemetary was established and is believed to be buried on the property. From "History of Rumford," page 26, A committee report ( 10 march 1792) the number of hundred acre lots being lived upon shows James McAllister on lot number 64, (North side of the river.) pg. 51, 1792-James McAllister had commenced clearing his lot, but was not recognized as an actual settler. NOTE: Is it a coincidence that James McAllister is in Rumford at this time with Daniel and Mary McAllister Harper? or does this hint at a possible relation? Also-Daniel Knight was on the next lot to James McAllister and he was not yet recognized as a settler either. Does this suggest a relation ship with these families? (Is Tryphena a Knight?) NOTES: my thoughts are, that Tryphena may be out of the Harper line or the Coleman line., out of Rindge, chesire co. NH. Daniel Harper b. mar 10 1766-son of Daniel and Rachel Coleman Harper. Daniel Harper had brothers; Ezekial ( it is said that they each had red hair and this is why Red Hill in Rumford is so called,) James Colman, Andros and Amos. Sisters were the wives of: William Godwin and Benjamin Swett jr. who settled Rumford. A check on those lines for Tryphena's surname proves fruitless. From the "History of Rumford." Page 52, A direct tax was levied by the General gov. in 1798 and it shows James McAllister with 100 acres valued at $200. page 62, At the town meeting of 1803, The Widow McAllister's tax for year 1800 was remmitted. Page 64, 1807, Dorcas Winkley, a pauper was set up for auction. her support for one year was struck off to Cotton Elliot. ( relation to John Winkley?) 1810- page65, The selectmen were authorized to manage with Mrs. Winkley and her children as they should think best .( no john Winkley.) page 71, A direct tax was levied to support the war with England in 1816 and a tax of 44 cents was taxed to John and James McAllister, owners of 100 acres valued at $200. (James McAllisters sons.) page 80, at a town meeting in 1846, "the sick McAllister girl in Harrison" was assigned to Henry Rolfe for care of the poor. NOTE: now, Under the maine poor relief system at that time. If someone became dependent upon relief for the poor the responsibility of caring for those persons fell on the home town of such persons. I believe that this sick girl is a grandaughter to James and Tryphena McAllister. page 376, James McAllister1- was in Rumford quite early and died here May 25, 1801. His Children were: 1. Eliphaz2, b. july 13 1793; d. 1794. 2.Dolly2, b. 6 july 1795, had marriage int. to Artemas Walton but married Henry Smith instead. abt. 1813/1814.(son of Amos Smith.) 3. John McAllister2, b. 23 april 1797, rumford, me./ died july 31 1882, oxford, me. 4. James McAllister2 , b. aug. 30 1799. (married Sarah Packard. dau. of: James Packard and Jemima Churchill.) sources: New pennacook folks and History of Rumford, me. Tryphena McAllister remarried a transient named John Winkley in july 20 1803. marriage intentions published july 2 1803 in History of Rumford, pg. 277. When Tryphena sold the farm in 1820 John Winkley didn't sign. (dead or gone by then.?) Note: There is a John Winkley who shows up in Fryeburg, me. under marriage intentions to another lady-abt. 1804, I think. If he is the same man I have yet to verify it-I think he could be. John and James ran off to join the war of 1812, but Tryphena went and dragged them back as she needed them on the farm. James McAllister 2- married Sarah Packard 1817 in Greenwood, me. ( pub. De. 14 1817 -Greenwood VR.) they resided there until about 1830 with 3 sons and probably two daughters. they are in the 1820 greenwood census. John McAllister is listed as head of household-also an older woman is listed in the house hold who's age fits that of Tryphena McAllister Winkley. John McAllister is in Norway, maine by 1822 and in Oxford, ME. by 1845. James and Sarah McAllister 4 children show up next on the 1850 harrison census. They are living near Isaac and Benjamin McAllister. NOTES: As James and Sarah are not listed ,I think they may have been taking by disease as well a daughter (remember Rumfords obligation to the sick McAllister girl in Harrison.) Also Is it coincidence that the 4 remaining children are living near Isaac and Benjamin McAllister? Sons of Joseph McAllister who is the son of Ananias McAllister or is this another hint of relationship? NOTES. John McAllister and his wife. Dolly McAllister Smith and her Husband are all buried in webber brook cemetary in Oxford, Me. ( Dolly and Henry in seperate plots.) New Immigrants to Norway 1822; page 126: John McAllister. (and others.) page 200: M.A. McAllister, 16, died of dysentry-1839. (daughter of John McAllister.) page 201-1842: child age 7 died of canker rash. (this is John McAllister's son.) source: History of Norway, ME. page 334; Down the hill 20 rods further, was the McAllister family. four boys attended school, Wm. John. Joseph, George. (the sons of John McAllister.) source: Norway in the forties. NOTES: Tryphena McAllister Winkley died in Norway, me. june 1827 at the age of 57. It is my belief that she is probably buried on the John McAllister farm in Norway, me. some where between the back side of Pikes Hill and the webber brook/ Pottle road in Oxford, me. Two unmarked graves with John and his wife in webber brook cemetary are believed to be Johns children (mary ann and Jonathan-the infant (also named Jonathan) may possibly be buried with Tryphena McAllister Winkley.)?
