The surname as such Maccandlish, eight of this name appear in Wigtownshire in the eighteenth century (Wigtown). William M`candlish in Balmangin,1794 in (Kirkcudbright). in 1684 the name appears in several vareants, Makkanless, Mccandlish, McAndlish, M`Canleis and finally M`caunles (parish) the spelling with Mac is probably now extinct, from Ireland, Maccuindlis, son of Cuindleas (an old Irish name - Woulfe), also Candlish.
