I'm trying to find out how I can trace Katherina Schwachler's German roots. All I know from the 1881 census is that she was a 21 yr old servant to a German pork butcher (Kuch) in North Shields, Northumberland. She married a John Clark in 1884 in Sunderland, reg. as Swachler. Would their marriage certificate record her parents' names and her town of birth? I would really appreciate any leads as she was my Gr.Gr.Grandmother and my Dad is very keen to know more about the German connection. |

Ive only ever bought one marriage cert in England it was my gt gt granparents in 1859 and no parents names were listed, only stated that they were of full age. its different here in Scotland, the certificates give a whole lot more information. |

Thanks Kate and Penny. I have tried familysearch and all it listed is the1881 census entry in England and found her marriage on freebmd. I have seen their childrens' Christening transcriptions in my local search library. It seems she never sought British citizenship as she was listed as a German national in 1901! Sunderland Reg office said if I could find which area of Germany she was from, they could put me in touch with the relavant German office. Sources on the net suggest The Tyrol or Bavaria in southern Germany. I even found a Herman Schwachler in New York census 1880 but then drew a blank. Regards Debra. |

Deb, buy the marriage certificate - it should give her fathers name and occupation and may well add where he lived. (Cant understand why Kates English marriage cert didnt give the fathers details) |
