A Scotcher is someone who made wedges to stop carts rolling whilst delivering barrels. A 'scotch' was the wedge. Hence the saying to 'scotch' a rumour (to stop) Also there is rumours that Scotcher is a corruption of 'le cher Scot' The Scotchers were Stuarts who followed Bonnie Prince Charlie to France. Later in 1700's they returned with 'corrupted' family names to hide their collaboration. ??? Any other stories/theories would be gratefully received!! Patricia Scotcher
