Orkney Shearers from Stronsay, Orkney. I am in the process of adding more details to the tree researched by Peter Sinclair "Pat" Shearer (deceased) whose information was passed on to his younger brother Stewart Shearer, currently resident in Kirkwall. This tree started with Peter Shearer born in Stronsay c1765 (who married Margaret Laughton - known sons John Shearer b1787 - moved to Eday, Orkney; Peter Shearer (1792-1835) & George Shearer b1797). The first Peter died after 1796 but possible earlier ancestors are suggested.. .Most descendants remained in Orkney (mainly Stronsay; Eday; & Kirkwall/St Ola parishes} - but there are known descendants in Scotland, England, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, S Africa & the USA (New Jersey & Alaska). As at 31 August 2004 there are 133 Shearers in my Tree, almost all descended from Peter Shearer/Margaret Laughton. I believe that all my Shearer names have Orkney ancestry. Two recent contacts suggest an appreciable amount of further information about some Stronsay Shearers and an offshoot of emigrants to New Zealand may be forthcoming. I am continuing to add this info as time permits to this site. I am very ready to open my tree to those who think that their Shearer ancestors might have Orkney Islands - Stronsay, Eday, Firth or Kirkwall/St Ola Parish links and am now increasingly citing supporting evidence - via the Orkney Archives in terms of Census records; Registers of Births & Marriages; Cemetery Records; etc to support my entries. In Nov 2004 I received my DNA genealogy test result, and am a participant in the "Shearer DNA Family Tree Project". If interested in this project please email me. I am John Shearer, born Dec 1948

Hello,
I am Iain Craigen Shearer bn 1964, my father is John Craigen Shearer bn 1924 my grandfather John Chalmers Shearer 's family are in the main from the Botriphinie/Keith/ Banff area of Scotland. I have traced my Shearers back to 1664 they are farmers from the Banffshire area, George Shearer of 1664 is as far back as I seem to be able to get. Do you know if the Orkney Shearer's are possibly related etc. I have 92 Shearers in my tree all originated from North East Scotland
Regards,
Iain Shearer.
