Re: MARY STAPLETON c1896 & HER FATHER JOSEPH STAPLETON C1864 I have just started trying to find out more about my Grandma as she was adopted and we knew very little about her early years from 1896 to 1906. After doing some research at the Medway Archives in Chatham,Kent I have been able to put some dates to the facts we already knew. She was born Mary Stapleton about 1896 and she went into the Medway Union Workhouse in July 1902 after her father deserted her. I known nothing about her mother as yet. She was transferred to the Medway Cottage Children's Home in Sep 1903 and finally adopted in 1906 by Fred & Annie Crimp who lived in Gillingham Kent. They changed her name to Winifred Violet Crimp. I found a Joseph Stapleton listed on the 1901 Census living in Chatham Kent. He was born about 1864 in Stepney London and his occupation was clay pipemaker. I can't find Mary on the 1901 Census as yet. She wasn't listed living with her father or the couple he had paid to look after her, a Henry Johnson & Ellen Lawrence. I just wondered if there is anyone out there who knows anything about Mary Stapleton & her father. Carole Moon |
