Stephensons Rocket - George Stephenson I am trying to locate family of George Stephenson, one of the designers of Stephensons Rocket. My interest is that I am not a relative, but one of my ancestors was reputably a friend of George Stephenson and we are searching for a photo of my relative. His name was Charles Leggott Whitaker and he was my great, great, great grandfather. He was born in 1809 in Adlingfleet, Yorkshire. He had several children (James, 1830; Charles, 1835; Ann, 1837; Robert, 1839; Harriet, 1841 and Sarah, 1861). He also had 3 wifes, Mary Swain, Rebecca Gregory and Mary Depradines. He died in Chesterfield, Derbyshire in 1889. No photos of him have appeared in my family archives and I would love to just put a face to a name. In the 1851 census he describes himself as 'Journeyman, Coachbuilder and Publican'! He ran a pub in Chesterfield, Deryshire called the Red Lion Inn, Packers Row, Chesterfield. If anyone has any further information on this infamous character I would love to hear from you. Kind regards Emma |
