Hi everyone, please can I have some help?
Robert Cadman b.1800( we think,) was the father of my grtgrt grandfather,Thomas b.1826 d.1860 Dudley,Worcestershire.
We got his (thomas`s) fathers name from his Marriage cert. when he married Rosanna Glover in Sedgley district,1946 ( and he is not deceased-he is a miner)
I have been on ancestry and freebmd and cannot find him. There doen`t seem to be any census record that has both their christian names on either.?
Help please !! I know you are wizards from other help you have given me before, and boy do i need a wizard with this .
Thankyou, cathy x
Can anyone find a birth record for Thomas Cadman ?

Just a point of geography

Dudley is more commonly found under Worcestershire than Staffordshire. It does span the borders of the two counties.

Is it possible that Thomas's full name was John Thomas?

Hi ANN
Sorry I didn`t get back to you sooner.Yes its possible as so many seemed to be selective in what name to use if they had more than one, although on his death cert.(and marriage cert.) he is just Thomas.
Thanks for your interest.

Hi Sylvia
thankyou for replying and for the look-up. I have taken another look at thomas`s marriage cert. and he married in 1846 in the parish of sedgley, in the county of Stafford.
His father is Robert.
so the record you found can`t be him after all.
sorry cathy

Cathy

You did give that information in the header ......... unfortunately, the only Thomas Cadman who shows up on the census is the one I posted

............... and one of the reasons that I posted was to show you that there isn't a Robert showing up. I actually said in the posting that it was the wrong father!!

The other reason is as a reference point for other helpers so they know that this one has been looked at.

Now, one possibility is that the guys are using different names

and this is much more common than you realise, so you have to be careful not to blindly discount records.

I was helping someone last week and we could not find her family on 3 successive censuses. However, a family with the same christian names, birth years and places but a different surname kept showing up on those same censuses.

When I investigated .... it was the right family!

For some reason, they changed their surname just after their only child was born. The child revereted to the original name when he left home at about 20, the parents kept the "new" name until the hsuband died, then the wife reverted to the old name

Why? Who knows!!

The other thing to consider very carefully is that it seems many of our ancestors gave made up names on their marriage certificates for their fathers ....... usually because they were illegitimate, but it looked better to have a name there. Sometimes, they said "father" was deceased, sometimes they gave him a job.

One thing you can do is to keep that record that I found until you can see if you can identify any siblings of Thomas ..... that could be key.
