Is there any body out there that can find this surname Graves-Lacey maybe back in the early 1900-1920's

Thanks

A bit more information would help please.
Generally a double surname was given to an illegitimate child?

Hello Lindsey,
I'm afraid there is not a lot I can give apart from up to 1901 he seems to have been just Thomas Graves he was 14 and I know he wasn't illegitimate.
He joined up at an early age told a fib that he was older or so the story goes, he then for some reason became Graves-Lacey, but I just cant find a surname of that anywhere when surching.
I do know that when he was grown up he always put that surname down.
I'm trying to track down his army number but giving up slowly!

Me again!

Been looking through paper work and all I have is

Born Thomas Henry z Graves, 1886 Hoxton

Father Thomas H Graves, mother Elizabeth

Was living with father in the 1901c still with surname Graves

He joined the army at an early age the story was he was only 14 or 15 he told a fib said he was older!

At some time in the army he went to India, I think before WW1. Was in the Riffle Brigade, and was injured so was retired out in WW1, when I do not know

Also he was awarded the DCM, so I was told

Why he started to call himself Graves-Lacey I do not know that is why it is making it so hard for me to track him and army number down, if he was awarded the DCM then how do I go about finding that out.

Sad but his children have now all died so there is no body with any more info.

Thanks for any help.

I think its a trip to kew or someone who is going, literally ploughing through all the cards. My Granpa took his wifes name and used both. Is there a family name ?
I cant find any on phone directories

Can I suggest something??? In my family, my gt.grandmother's first husband died young and she re-married (my grandmother's father)

In the Census Returns, the 5 children of the first marriage became known by the 2 surnames, double barrelled in the same way as your relative, so my grandmother and her "pure" siblings were "Reid" and the half-siblings were "Allan-Reid".
One of the half siblings did not marry and kept the double-barrelled name all her life.

Just another thought - might help???
Good luck!
