Thank you Lost for Words

I suppose its a mystery to us why anyone would lie about their age just to join the army - but it was a very different life and world then

Does anybody know about John Plane c1883 born possibly Little Snoring, Norfolk? I cannot find him on BMD, Norfolk baptism records or for Planes in Little Snoring in the 1891 Census. Although there is a John William Plane c1886, born Fakenham Norfolk, in Little Snoring in the 1901 Census - so this could be him.

I came across him because of his British Army discharge papers: he enlisted in the Royal Garrison Artillery as Gunner 17976 on 12/12/1903 giving his age as 19 years six months, but no middle name. He served in South Africa 1914-1916, where he caught Malaria, and Salonica 1916-1918. Medically discharged 17/02/1919, due to the Malaria, when he gave his next of kin's (wife Louisa) address in Rondebosch, Cape Town. However, the cover page gives his contact address as Little Snoring, Norfolk.
