Christine, if you put in Marie Wharton in the 'quick search' box at the top you will see that she is in someone's tree born 1933 Preston. Tree owner Leanne. She also has Margaret in her tree.

Might be worth dropping her a line.

Sorry if you have already done all this,

Selena

I have obtained my mother's birth certificate and there is a gap for father's details with no nee after Ellen's surname so I am presuming my mother was was born out of wedlock. I don't know if things were different in the 20's.

hi

I can only say that is was anytime 1978 onwards I am sorry I can't be more specific. I know she was in a residential nursing home in the 70's as my mother visited her on a trip to Preston but apparently it was not a good visit with other family members something to do with post war credits. I am preety sure my mother's visit was 77/78 I think sorry I can't be any more help than that.

Do you know when Ellen Wharton died because the death certificate might help

I have checked the complete marriage indexes from 1925 to July 1929 for a marriage for an Ellen Beattie, but there isn't one anywhere in the country.

The only problem is that there is a missing quarter Oct -Dec 1925. In cases like this, I look for it through the year rather than the name, but there is no option for a fourth quarter in 1925 on Ancestry, so it may be possible that she married then

Here are the three births

Winifred I Wharton, mothers maiden name Wharton Ap-June 1925 Preston vol 8e p 720

so this suggests that Winifred was illegitimate

Margaret M Wharton July- Sept 1929 Preston Vol 8e p609 Mothers maiden name Beattie

Marie E Wharton July- Sept 1933 Preston vol 8e p 605 Mothers maiden name Beattie

I don't understand this because the last two births suggest that Ellen was Ellen Beattie before she married, so why is Winifred registered as Wharton and not Beattie??

Hi

Margaret was born in 1929 in Preston and Marie was born also in Preston in 1933, there surname was also Wharton. It is amazing what you start to dig up when you look for your history. As I was on 14 when my mother passed away and she was married to my father (her second marriage as far as I am aware) not much was told to me about her family and my father's family are none the wiser either.

Thank you so much for this you are a star

Unfortunately there are two possible births in the Preston registration district around the time Ellen would have been born

Record

Ellen Wharton 1907 Jul-Aug-Sep Preston Lancashire
View Record
Ellen Wharton 1908 Jan-Feb-Mar Preston Lancashire

Do you know how when the other two daughters were born? Even a year, then I can check to see if they were born under the surname of Wharton, if not then I can look for a marriage for Ellen. If she did marry, the certificate would give her age and her fathers name, so you could get the correct birth certificate for her

hi
to be honest I am trying to find out any information at all. I am very interested to trace back as far as I can. I know that Ellen was a weaver so I am presuming that her parents would have been also. Any information at all will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Chris

I am trying to find infomation on Ellen Wharton, she lived in Preston and to the best of my knowledge had 3 daughters Winnifred Irene born 12th March 1925 at the time she was living at 43 Fitzgerald Street Preston. I am preety sure her other daughters were Marie and Margaret. There is no father listed on Winnifred's birth certificate so not sure if there was any husband, also no other surname's ie no nee after Wharton. I have been led to believe that a young lad from London was evacated to Preston in WW2 and that he broke his leg diving into the river Ribble that ran along the bottom of the garden at the time. Winnifred married Thomas Bootle in St Marks church Preston on 26th July 1947. I would be very appreciative of any information anybody can help with. I think I have covered everything I know. Winnifred was my mother she passed away in 1979 and I have been rather surprised at what I have found out so far please can anybody out there help me in my search I will be forever gratefull.

Many thanks if anticipation

Chris
