What became of Alison Adam, coal bearer, aged 13?

Alistair Report 9 Feb 2008 13:00

Alison was born on 28 October 1828 in Newton, Midlothian.

These are her words to the Commission on Mining, in 1842:

"I know my age from mother's Bible. Father is dead; I never wrought while he was in life but went to a school kept by Miss Hunter, who taught me reading and writing and sewing. I go now when able.

My hours of work are from 2 in the morning till 10 and 12 at day; after work get porridge which neighbour has ready for me, who take a look in at house while mother is away and locks up the bairns, who are four and seven years of age.

I generally get four hours schooling, for mother pays 4d. a-week. I wash and change before going to school. Work in No.28 pit; the water covers my ankles and there are frequent accidents from stones falling from roof which is soft. Bad air frequently stops my breath, when I run to mother who hangs the baskets on at the pit bottom".

[Knows scripture history very well, reads and writes fairly; seemed to have a great dislike to the work; very intelligent. Interviewer's comment]

I can't trace any record of Alison after the 1841census, apart from the above words.

Thanks, I saw the Begbie record, but Alison's father was Hugh Adam, rather than Peter Adams, and the Begbies seem to be rather too "posh".

Saw the different father's name but also saw daughter Magdaline.
A death cert should give you more info

Peter Adams was a farm servant in Gorgie Mills (from the Adams/Begbie OPR marriage record). The Adam family were all miners in Newton.

Apologies. Have just checked the death certificate, and Alison Begbie's father is shown as Hugh Adams, coal miner.

Perhaps she felt she had to lie about this at the time of her marriage?

Thanks.

Excellent!!

Just been looking on scotlandspeople on 1871 census, no other children after Davina.

Quite a bit of info on IGI and it is free to search.
