Sam Report 9 Feb 2008 18:47

You need to get a birth certificate of one of the children then, to get full name of Mary.

I have now found 1871 information, it would be helpful if you could post all the available information, then we could start helping straight away rather than waste time looking for census info that you already have...

Mary Oxley, head, widow, 52, charwoman, born Moor Square, Cripplegate
James Oxley, son, unmarr, 32, general dealer, born Moor Square, Cripplegate
Henry Oxley, son, 26, general dealer, born ???Court, Cripplegate
Thomas Oxley, son, unmarr, 16, newspaper dealer, born Cripplegate
Elizabeth Oxley, dau, unmarr, 14, artifical flower maker, Cripplegate.

I will have a look on earlier census's now I know where/when these people were born.

Are you certain that the Henry on 1841 isn't the right one? HIs wife there appears to be Helen. As the age of James matches almost, maybe Helen died and Henry remarried?

With a 10 year gap between Henry & Thomas, Mary may not be Henry's mum

Linda

the fact that a census states someone is the mother (or father) does not always mean that that person is actually the mother.

There are many many examples of second marriages where it is only digging by us that proves that.

Many people didn't have long lives in those days, death in childbirth was common, etc etc.

You have to be flexible, and realise that our ancestors diid not tell the enumerators everything ...... or that the enumerators were themselves not flexible. If a kid lived with a man and a woman, well they must be his father and mother ........ no ifs, ands or buts about it!!

The other fact you have to accept ... is that not all the information on a marriage certificate may be true.

The father may be correct, but son didn't tell vicar father was dead 'cos the vicar didn't ask that question ... so that answers the discrepancy betrween Mary being a widow on the cnesus before the marriage.

OR there may not have been a father, ie, the child may have illegitimate, and just made up a father's name to put on the marriage certificate 'cos it looked "better" for his inlaws.

Don't be in such a hurry to discount information, and don't always believe what you see or are told!!

The only way you can be absolutely sure that you have the right relationships is to get the birth certificate and marriage certificate (bearing in mind what I have just said about fahters' names on the latter).

James Oxley 4

Adress:- Butlers Alley

a death of an Ellen

Deaths Jun 1848 (>99%)

OXLEY Ellen Chelsea 3 43

- - - -

Ellen/Helen Oxley not found on a census after 1841

- - - -

probably Henry's birth registration .... East London is the registration district that includes Cripplegate

Births Sep 1846 (>99%)

Oxley Henry E London 2 218

I dare to suggest that father Henry was married twice.

His first wife Helen/Ellen was the mother of James and Henry, she died, and his second wife (could be common-law) was the mother of Thomas and Elizabeth.

errrrrr

I'm not "on the team"

There is no team

we are all just members like you who have paid a subscription to join GR, but who spend a lot of our time helping others.

GR does not have a team of helpers ... despite the implications in their advertising, all help on here is given by volunteer members who just like to do genealogy, and like to help those up against a brick wall.

I can't actually give you much more help than I already have .... until you get that birth certificate.
