I am searching for information on my grandfather James French born in 1899 possibly in Newcastle. His marriage certificate gives his father's name as William French, Ship's Painter but I can't find them in the 1901 census. It was thought in the family that he may have been illegitimate and his mother may have been a music hall performer. We have photos of a music hall act called Witty and Whyse but dont know what the connection is. Any information would be wonderful.

Thanks

Have you googled Witty and Whyse?

It's amazing what you can find out there!!

it might be worth also googling music hall acts, or similar.

Hi Sylvia

I have tried but didn't come up with anything but thanks for the suggestion. I have a suspicion that he may have been registered under a different name as I have had no luck in finding his first world war records either.
