Hi all,

I have not long since found out that my Great x4 Grandfather was born out of wedlock, I just wondered if anyone out there knew of finding out the name of the father. We are looking at the late 1700's and in the Gloucestershire area. My Greatx4 grandfathers' name was Richard Yeates but was baptised Richard HALL Yeates as this is supposed to mean that his Fathers last name was Hall apparently.I am desperate to trace a Father.

Thank You,

David.

Do you know his mothers name. Only a long shot but I found one in 1791 on a2a. A court order for maintenance.
i didn't name the child (think they do sometimes) but it had the father mother and whether ir was son or daughter.
Worth a look.

It might not be a local man!

If your 4x great grandfather's mother had been a servant ... she could well have been away from home.

Apparently it is sometimes possible to find information by looking at the original parish record if you can find it. Occasionally the vicar made a notation in the margin re parentage or putative parentage.

However, just like in modern days ....... the majority of men didn't want to acknowledge their offspring because they would have to support mother and child by order of the parish.

And, their wives might object!

You will probably have to settle for not knowing who his father was.

Thank you all for your replies.
Richards mother was called Elizabeth and came from Shipton Solers, the place where Richard was baptised. Also there were no Halls living in the village at the time.Elizabeth also gave birth to another illegitimate child in 1803 and then she died in 1804 leaving Richard parentless at the age of 7.There are a lot of Halls in Gloucestershire and as stated will probably be impossible to trace.

All the best,

David.

You could try contacting the local Records Office to see if a bastardy order was made (ordering the father to pay for the child's maintenance).
