1941's marriage are not on the free sites, you need credits on Find My Past or Ancestry subs. (don't use GR credits)

Do you know who he married?

Did they have any children....and if so what name and when?
Their names on the GRO birth registration will show their mother's maiden name.
Marriages are referenced with surname of spouse, so if we knew that name it would be easier to cross check.

A few options for you

Ancestry will give you a 14 day free trial

If you but Family Tree Maker (£5.99 in the supermarket) they will give you a 30 day free trial

If you log on to Ancestry & press "Upgrade" followed by the back button, you will get a little note saying "Stop we'll give you 20% discount on annual membership"

For anyone esle, the back button will work on renewals but I think you need to cancel towards the end of you membership & then change your mind & re subscribe

A subscription to Ancestry gives you access to the complete birth marriage and death index from 1837 to 2005 along with absolutely loads of other things,

A yearly subscription works out at a little over £1.50 a week with unlimited access so it's well worth it.
