Birth cert 1905 Edmonton for Joseph Whelan shows father as Joseph Michael Whelan (general labourer) and mother Christiana Jane Webster.

No problem with the Websters...have traced them back to 1851.

In 1901 Christiana was living with two illegitimate children. No marriage between her and Joseph Michael....have checked 1901 to 1915 when I suspect he died aged 50 in Edmonton (Free BMD)

There are several Joseph Whelans born around 1865 who could fit the bill, but without a marriage cert to help with his parentage I am at a loss as to know how to get further back. Am I missing an obvious solution?

Thanks for that. Her mother's name was also Christiana Jane, and this was her re-marriage to John Baker after she was widowed.

The problem is without a marriage it's very difficult to pin Joseph down. The only birth I can find is this one

Now he's a labourer could it be him ? As I can't find his birth I don't know what his middle name is.

I have looked at all the likely candidates in 1901 and although the Battersea one looks fairly likely, it's all guesswork isn't it? No proof it's him.

I have the reverse of your problem, parents didn't marry but Dad (named on cert) has an unusual name plus Mum bless her had a base child who is with his parents in 1901. Great I've got the Dad but I'm going to have to wait until 2012 for the Mum!

Wow - if this does turn out to be the right Joseph, his parents have actually given their birthplace town and county in Ireland! Can't remember when I last saw that...

There is a Joseph Whelan marriage in Lambeth in Mar 1907 - 3 grooms. There is also Christiana Swanson - 1 groom. No time now to follow this up, but possibly one to be be ruled out?
