Wonder if anyone can help solve a mystery ?. Have been looking for my mother's Great Uncle, Stephen CARNEY who served in WW1 (he would have only been 16/17 in 1914) . Had no joy with his records but came up with a Michael CARNEY born 1880 in Roscommon, Ireland. My Gt Gt Grandmother's second husband was called Michael CARNEY (they only married in 1899). This Michael (aged 34 in 1914) gave his mother as Rose CARNEY (My Gt Gt Grandmother and Phoebe Carney as his sister (My Gt Grandmother). Definately connected as he gave the address my Gt Grandmother lived at - my mother remembers her living there!) We know of nothing about this Michael. I cannot find anything birth records, marriage or death records. Rose's previous married name was GOLDSTRAW. Can't find any trace of a Michael GOLDSTRAW either. I'm stumped ! Any ideas gratefully received!

Don't forget that the WW1 records are far from complete, especially for the lower ranks.

The records were moved from the Department of Defense to another building in London for safekeeping at the outbreak of WW2. That building was bombed.

The surviving records were moved to Kew, further away from London to be safe. There was a fire that destroyed a lot more.

So in fact, you are extremely lucky if you do happen to find an existing record for anyone

Thanks. Still a mystery though. Who is this Michael? Is it Rose's second husband but if so why give Rose's details as his mother ? Maybe this Michael is the other Michael's son? Who knows ! As you say lucky to discover anything.

This is they only Maud mother Rose and Birmingham as place of birth that shows on 1891 census , could not find a Maud with a father Michael , so she could be Rose's daughter from 1st marriage. If you haven't got the Rose/Carney marriage cert. you may want to look for it as it may confirm names
