You ladies have great vision. I would never have even had the 'savvy' to connect Hildrew with Dew. Shame it isn't the right one but a brilliant try anyway. I am more than happy with the 1901 census information ladies and I have got Margaret Jane Hodgsons(nee Cotton) details back to her birth, so do not worry.

Have checked on the 1901 census..there is a John Hildrew married to a Margaret...going by the ages it isn't Midland Margarets one...........what a shame I thought you had found it.

Looking at the other entries on the page for Margaret Ellen Dew??....if you look at the way the enumerator has written the other Ds....the D in Dew isn't written that way...

Thank you Vera and Selena - you have been a pair of gems. Vera - what exactly did you input to find this 1901 entry for the Atkinson family? Did you put Jane Ann Dew/ William Atkinson or what because I have spent a good while looking and couldn't get them. Thanks again both of you.

Hi Vera - that is the marriage entry that I found. Regarding the 1901 census you have given me, it looks hopeful as Jane's mother would have been 52 in 1901 but just a small discrepancy inasmuch as Jane was definitely Jane Ann not Annie and her mother was Margaret Jane not Margaret Ellen. Am making a note of it though as it is the best yet. If it is the correct one, it looks as if Jane's mother Margaret Jane Hodgson remarried and Jane Ann took on the name. Will see if I can spot that marriage. It would be between 1891 and 1901. Thank you.

even worse could her mother have remarried or lived with someone and both their names are different?

I have Jane Ann Hodgson born 1876 Sunderland, the daughter of John Hodgson and wife Margaret. She is 5 on 1881 census, and 15 on 1891 census living with widowed mother. However, I can find neither her or her mother on 1901 census. I thought perhaps mother had died and Jane Ann married. With this in mind I trawled Freebmd and found a possible/probable marriage June 1896 to eitther William Atkinson or Robert Kirton. I went back to the 1901 census and looked for a Jane Atkinson b. 1876 Sunderland with husband William and also looked for a Jane Kirton b. 1876 Sunderland with husband Robert. Guess what? could find neither. Thought perhaps was mistaken about her being married and searched again in her original name Jane Hodgson b 1876 Sunderland. Yet again no success. Is she there and I am missing her? Would someone be prepared to re-trace my steps and see if they can find her please ?
