Hi again Margaret
You are right of course but it is the only lead.
I have found that most of the stories that are handed down turn out to be incorrect.
Regards Jim

This looks like the marriage of their son, mother's name Lorain.

3338-23 William Thomas HOPKINS, 26, auto trimmer, Ontario, 613 Ontario St., s/o Thomas HOPKINS (b. England) & Mary Elizabeth LORAIN, married Beatrice Patricia ASH, 26, operator, England, 37 Bloor St. East, d/o William ASH (b. The only problem with that one, Jim, is if that is indeed the family then it rules out any Indian, ahem First Nations People, conection because both the father and mother had British origins. Although mother Mary was born in Ontario her mother was born in England.

You may wish to take a chance that the Dorothy mentioned is his sister. You can then use her parents names.

I have no idea, never even thought of it. Worth looking into I guess. Good job someone's brain is working. As I think mines gone on holiday with out me haha. Estate agents coming around and I never realised how stressful it would all be. Never mind nice to come on here and escape for a while. Thank you Margaret.
Any idea how I can find out what boat he came over in and when?

Was wondering, Donna, if he might have been a Canadian soldier during WW2 and that's why he went to England at that time?

How very sad!
I don't think I like your M.I.L.
I don't know what to suggest. Cache Creek is in British Columbia, a long way from Toronto, Ontario where he was born.
The Indian connection is intriguing. Actually that's not politically correct anymore. They are First Nations people.

sorry just got back from school. We are led to believe that his father or grandfather was a native India of Canada. Yes I think his sister was older than him. Sorry such little info I know.

Sadly granddad was put into as home by my M.I.L. she told us all he was cockoo and didnt know who anyone was. She never told us where he was but we foundhim 6 months before he died. So that 6 months for us was very important and sadly we did not get to ask him about his family. She probably knows but we do not speak.

Long story needless to say she had had all his money and left him too die alone. He had not had a visitor in two years before we found him and she only lived 5 minutes up the road. So have been trying to find out about him since he died. He had a picture of the Indian but my hubby can not remember if it was granddads father or grandfather. Could be completely wrong but is all the info we have.

Thank you for your time so far. Granddad moved here but did not sdtay here, he had his children here and after his wife died and grandchildren started to get older he went back to Canada. A place called Cache Creek. He lived their for 6 months of the year and in Mexico for the other 6 months. Only came back to England because he had a very bad crash in his van, nearly killed him. So his daughter went out there and brought him back. He never wanted to die here. He wanted to be at home in Canada. Think he came back here in 1993ish.

Do you happen to know if Stephen's father was from England? Would that be why he went there? The Dorothy on the 1911 census had father Thomas, born England.

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 11 Mar 2008 15:00

Murphy's law! We have the 1911 census in Canada but he was born 1912! Do you happen to know if sister Dorothy was older than Stephen? There is a Dorothy on the census in Toronto. She was born 1907.

Trying for years to find my husbands grandfathers family. He was born in Canada and moved here sometime before 1942. We think his sister was called Dorothy and she also moved here to the UK. Granddad died here UK with us in Dec 2002. We would love to find out who his parents were. We registered the dfeath and sent his birth details away to Canada to get large birth cert as we have credit card sized one. They said we needed to give them his parents names. Which of course we don't know. Which is why we needed the birth cert. So does anyone know how long we still need to wait until we wil be able to find out. Is there anyone in Canada who can look it up? He was born in York County, Ontario, Toronto. Does anyoen have any idea's?
With kind regards Donna
