Guilty as charged, only just thought of it, although I do sometimes mention freeBMD/familysearch etc first to try to educate.

The thread:

Edit: Yes it was Cornwall OPC, v useful since it gives fathers names and much more info than freeBMD. Thanks.

Have an ancestry sub and do help, not been on here that long, but do have 70 pages of threads helping others.

Was going to ask Claire directly, to add another link to my favourites, but thought it might be useful to discuss.

David,
I have seen Claire in Wales help others.

Most helpers have either a subscription Ancestry or findmypast.com.

With a subscription package you can search to help others.

And does that include you too as you did a look up yesterday that didn't include the source.

I have on some ocassions add a link to a site explaining that it is free to use but not posted the info they were after.....Then someone will do the look up for you to be then ignored.....Then maybe a week or so later you'll see that same person asking of a look up.

I feel that the likes of us that make it easy for people & that they think why should they bother

I dont know what the thread was David, may be the OPC - online parish clerk helped claire. Cornwall seem to have some very active OPCs. Just google for OPC and the area you are interested in.

Whilst looking at a reply from "Claire in Wales" today ref a marriage in Cornwall I thought "Wonder where she got that info from"?

I must admit to being in the ETR camp and agree with the adage "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime".

Do the "helpers" think it would be useful to add source info to the posts? Nothing too detailed, just a link to the search section of the site or a note to say if it was free or not.

Apologies for the ramble.
