In order to narrow it down, you could order the marriage cert which would hopefully give you Johns fathers name and occupation: |

Oh right, thanks for that. Ill have to look into getting that one. I was unaware that marriage certs gave details on parents. Thanks for the help! |

There are two possibilities on the 1841 census, but not knowing Glouc I'm not sure which is more relevant to Chalford: |

Linda - In 1841 adult (15+) ages were supposed to be rounded down to a mult of 5, so actually the most they should be off by is 4 y |

How strange. Any reason why they did that? I guess thats why I have been having trouble finding him. Thanks for the two posts from 1841. They both look promising. I will get hold of his marriage certificate within the next couple of weeks or so to see if it lists his fathers name and occupation. Thanks again! |

I don't know, but my guess is they were intending to tabulate stuff, and had predetermined they were going to use 5 y sized chunks for the ages. They didn't really know how useful censuses were (or might be) in 1841. |

I received the marriage certificate for John and Sarah. John's dad was also called John and was a weaver! |

I looked in 1851 for people born in Chalford, and they seem to be enumerated in Bisley. Sure enough: |

Ive been struggling still to find the John Bown who is the father of the John who married Sarah Panter in the 1841 census. I thought I had them living in Avening |
