Nicola

there are basically no census records before 1841 ...... that was the first countrywide one.

so you have to look at parish records to find information pre-1841, or look up the archives.

Dear Nicola

Have you contacted the local archive and history centre for the area?

They could hold copies of documents or at least, give you directions on where to look.

There are very few pre-1841 census records that survive.
Most are very damaged and the writing cannot be clearly read.

You could try these two record offices:

The WEST SUSSEX RECORD OFFICE:
3 ORCHARD PLACE
CHICHESTER
PO19 1DD

Tel No: 01243 753 600

www.westsussex.gov.uk
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

EAST SUSSEX RECORDS OFFICE
THE MALTINGS
CASTLE PRECINCTS
LEWES
BN7 1YT

Tel No: 01273 483 349

www.eastsussexcc.gov.uk/useourarchives.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Would parish records help instead for your search?

Have you tried the family history society for Sussex?
Could be worth a try.

Best wishes
x

I'm so sorry that I didn't respond to this Thread. I'm not always as IT minded as I should be!

What my Thread should have said is

"Does anyone know whether any Census records survived for Slaugham, Sussex pre 1841??"

I gather from my very slow learning curve on this Family History lark that there are some, but only a few, that did survive pre 1841.

Apologies again. Hope someone will forgive me and respond.
