could anyone help me please, my grandfather Rupert Lyle born around 1860 married Maud Ethel Hancock Sept 1919. That is all I can find out about the man. I have the record for death 1938 St.Pancres, if this is him. On wedding cert. it say father Rupert William, who also doesnt exist either..!!! Any ideas gratefully received. thanks. Jan

On the marriage index it has his name as RuBert and not RuPert.. I wonder if this is a mis-transcription of Robert. There is this birth:-

Name: Robert Lyle
Year of Registration: 1859
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
District: Greenwich
County: Greater London, Kent, London
Volume: 1d
Page: 632

There are no births on Ancestry for a Rupert Lyle in the 1800's. I'd still be inclined to think it may be Robert and the name just changed over the years to Rupert.

Heres the marriage from freebmds.

Rupert Lyle married Maud E Hancock 1919 sept qt Wandsworth 1d 1815.

Just a thought but Lyle could be a Scottish name

Another possibility is he wasnt born as Lyle

Robert Lyle 1860 is engine pattern maker in 1901

Robert William Lyle retired furnace man. I suppose he could be called of independent means

im wondering if as a patten maker he would make machines for the taylor chalk industry so there could be a connection with the Hancocks, my great grandfather Thomas James had plenty of fingers in plenty of pies, would a furness man burn chalk?

Janice.
I dont know if you have access to Ancestry to look at the 1901 census.

If not on GR there are 1841-1901 census.
The 1901 gives you age, where people are born and occupations Also the area they are living in but not the address
You can do a free search but need to pay for additional information.

However once you found who you think is your man you can then ask other GR members do do a census look up for you
