I am trying to work out why a family who were all baptised with the surname Poole in the 1830's suddenly changed their name and became Schofield for the 1841 census.

Does anyone know where local papers from that time would be held please as I want to check and see if there is anything reported on.

Stephen.
The library in Barnsley has an excellent local history section with old newspapers on film. I found a very detailed report of a coroner´s inquest into the death of my g grandfather.
The staff are really helpful.
Sorry. don´t have an address or phone number for them, but I´m sure you will find it if you google.
Good luck.

Hi Mary,

Is that a baptism you are referring to please?

I have found the marriage in 1837 in Silkstone church.

No it was the birth register,I don't think a childs baptism would give the Page and Volume number.

There were 2, one J/A/S 1838 22 119 for Sophia Schofield Poole that was typed, then sophia Hayes Schofield Poole 1839 22 158 hand written.

A death for Sophia Schofield Poole was registered Ecclesfield J/F/M 1839 22 83.

All the children seem to have the Schofield as middle name except Edwin Heyes Poole 1849.

Maybe it was Charles Pooles mum nee Schofield,I can't find him anywhere either Poole or Schofield born @ 1810.

Have you got them in 1841 as I can't find them.

Sophia Hayes Christened Glenfield 26.1.1811 by Benjamin and Nanny.

Do you have the witnesses on marriage record for 1837?

Hi Mary,

I have Charles and Sophia marrying 12th Feb 1837.
Witnesses Joseph Bennett & Johnathon Shaw.
That was in Silkstone church.

Charles and all his brothers and sisters were all baptised as Pool in St Marys church Barnsley. I have been and seen the records.

Their parents are Charles Poole and Hannah Darby. Hannah is from Barnsley whilst Charles is from Stepney, Middlesex.

Charles & Sophia are on 1841 census as Schofield as are Charles parents and all the other children.

It looks as if they have suddenly decided to change surname.

Charles Poole and Hannah Darby married 13th September 1809 in St Marys Barnsley. Charles is recorded as a "Clock & Watch maker" but by the 1841 census he is recorded as a bleacher.

I have to go out for an hour or two now but will respond when I get back.

Was there 2 Sophia hayes Schofield as there seems to be one married to Robert Whiteley in Jan 1867 in Barnsley,he went to Philladelphia in 1882 with 3 of his children.

This is a difficult family.

Hi Mary,

They certainly are difficult. The penny has dropped as to where you are getting the information from. Sophia born 1838 died in 1839. they then had a second girl later in 1839 and that is the Sophia who you have found the marriage for.

I hadn't found them going abroad.

My wife's line is through Edwin born 1849.

This has had me stumped for ages and I am only just starting to piece things together.

I am very grateful for your help which has got me looking in the right area.

I was expecting something odd with the name change but the fact that they have used both names on registering births suggests there is possibly nothing out of the ordinary.

It is confusing a lot of people, there are trees with ellen Schofield on Ancestry but they have her dad as Charles Schofield born stepney and Hannah Schofield born Barnsley. They have no hope of going futher back.

I googled Schofield family from Barnsley 1820s the first page of results next to last one down page as info on Sopha marrying Robert Whiteley.

So do you think it was Charles Poole senior from Stepney that decided to change the name??

I hate it when I can't get to the bottom of things ,I'm like a dog with a bone.

Hannah is definitely Darby, I have seen the church records.

I suspect it would have been the father who changed the family name but looking at the birth records against what the census says it's very strange.

The second son of Charles and Hannah called John married another Hannah and on the 1851 census they are on as Schofield.

Charles and Hannah did have a daughter Ellen she was at home in 1841 going to look for her on the 1851 census.

I am going to try to track down the other children see if they did the same.
