Can anyone help please? I am visiting Longton next week (from Northern Ireland) and would like to find the grave of Adam DAWSON who died on
29th Dec 1879 aged 61, in Longton nr Stoke-on-Trent (last known address 36 Wood Street, Longton). He was survived by his wife Sarah (nee ROWLEY) who died in 1891. I think there are a few Churches in Longton, so don't know where to start looking. I only have one day there, so really need some help locating his grave. Not on the National Burial Index 3rd Edition.

Thanks

Hello Kim,

long way to travel in the hope of finding your ancestors burial place. Try making a phone call first.

A Stoke on Trent City Archives
City Central Library
Bethesda Street
Hanley
Stoke on Trent
ST1 3RS By telephone: (+44) 01782-238420
By fax: (+44) 01782-238499

Since you have the exact date of death it should be quite easy for them to look at the burial records for Longton. Also someone may have indexed the headstones for Longton churches (assuming he had one) which again is really easy to check. Also google Staffordshire record office for their contact numbers and give them a ring also. Hope you have a safe journey and calm waters!!

I fiddled about with some maps and came up with the followwing....

Spring garden Road is 3 mins away from Wood Street.
It's 1'15 miles away.

Longton Cemetery opened in 1877 and covers approximately 7.4 hectares

Looks like you'll need comfy walking shoes!

Good luck and happy hunting.

Thanks again Ann,

Found the CD on the website (£25 !!). In the meantime i contacted Stoke-on-Trent Archives and they were able to tell me that Adam DAWSON was buried in St.John the Baptist Church, but that the Church was demolished in 1979 and the graveyard 'cleared' and as far as the Cemeteries Department was aware there was no re-interment (makes you wonder what they did with the remains??) They also told me there was no record of the monumental inscription on the CD which they had a copy of.
Disappointing result, but nonetheless, saved me a lot of time searching graveyards and records.

Regards

Kim
