Moira Report 4 Jan 2012 23:43

I'm looking for info on my grt grandmothers family. Her name according to her death record (Scotland) was Eliza Jane Finnegan born abt 1877. According to the 1901 Scottish Census she was born in Belfast. Her marriage record of 1921 in Glasgow states her father (still alive) was a Soldier and her mother (also still alive) was Catherine Cochrane. Eliza died in 1930 in Glasgow by which time her father was deceased.

Some years ago I obtained what I believed to be her parents marriage record from the NI records office which showed them to be married in the Church of Ireland in 1864. But now I have reason to believe that Eliza was Catholic as she had her 3 illegitimate children from a relationship before she got married, baptised in the Catholic Church in Glasgow. Two of these children were then put in an orphanage run by the Catholic Church when their father died (he was Protestant which might be why they never married?)One of them emigrated to New Zealand and kept her faith in the Catholic Church and left them a considerable amount of money in her will.

On the 1911 Irish Census I found a Patrick Finnegan - an Army Pensioner and his wife Catherine living in Newbliss Town in Monaghan which isnt that far from Belfast....

If any of this connects with your Finnegans please get in touch or if anyone can help me past this brick wall I would be really grateful.

Hi Moira,
I too have hit many brick walls with my Finnigan/Finnegan ancestry.
Mine moved from Co Monaghan to Glasgow in around 1852.

There were 3 generations in all who arrived around the same time.
To make it worse, both of ggg grandparents were called Finnigan and I expect that they were already related prior to their marriage.... even their parents had the same 1st names ie: Patrick and Ann!
They lived in various tenements in the High Church area, but all of them lived in or around High St.

On most census returns, individuals gave their place of birth as Ireland, but I found some of their births were actually recorded in Glasgow. I also found the reverse.

If the children of your Eliza were placed in care, it is quite possible that she applied for Poor Relief.
Have you tried Poor Relief Records that are held at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow?
I have found a number of applications made by my families, and gleaned so much info about their lives and living conditions.

Out of curiosity, where was Eliza living when she died?

Moira...I can locate Pat and Cath in Newbliss 1901 but neither in 1911...and providing these were the parents of Eliz.Jane then I cannot see them marrying in COI...(
The above Patrick Finnegan and Cath. Cochrane were b Co Monaghan and both were RC.

Children..b Co Monaghan
(Found so far)
Rose b 1870
John b 1872
Cath.b 1878

Does this help at all.....?

I assume this is the marriage you are refering to....?

Patrick finnegan married Catherine Cochrane 18th July 1864 in St Anne's C.O.,I. Belfast. There's a baptism for a Mary Finnegan 1865 St Patrick R.C. Belfast, parents Patrick Finnegan & Catherine Cochran. More than likely 1 of her parents her a R.C

Made a mistake, it not a baptism , it a birth in urban 1 Belfast.

A random check of Finegan (Monaghan ) and Cochran (Monaghan) Surnames as both state 1901 b Monaghan shows Finegan RC ..Cochran...COI/Pres. unless of course there is another couple somewhere with same names....!!!
Church Records would show when Cath. Cochran converted....

You didn't have to convert to C.O.I. to get married in St. Anne's

Eringobragh1916 Report 5 Jan 2012 16:30

What I meant Maura was that the Newbliss (1901) Pat and Cath were down as RC therefore if Cath was previously not RC then she must have coverted following the marriage otherwise she would have put down whatever her Rel was.
Does that make sense ...?

I still cannot find anything relative to Eliz.J. (?1877)
