Many thanks for all your information. I have the various census returns since 1841 for John and Sarah's family; also various B/M/D certificates for some of their children. It's poor John's parents I'm seeking. The signatures on his marriage record are definitely those of known relatives but can't decipher the name of his father(?). Looks like Allpress/Allpr.... Tried those in web search but no success. I seek him here, I seek him there ... PJ |

The Cambridgeshire Family History Society have a burial record from Sutton: |

If the family were in Sutton, then his death may be registered in Cambridgeshire; there is only one death for John Ashton in the late 1840s, in the Jan-Mar quarter of 1849, in the Ely registration district, which is a good fit for Sutton. |

John is also mentioned on Familysearch as the father of the last three boys (Edward, Rowland and William Cecil, all baptised in Sutton on 29 April 1849). |

The marriage in 1833 in Cheshunt was by licence - the application to the Vicar General for the marriage licence is available via FindMyPast/Society of Genealogists. |

Pat, where was he on the 1841 and what was the year of birth shown on that census? |

Can anyone help me to find John Ashton who married Sarah Maria Woollaston White in 1833? I have traced the Woollaston/White connection back through many generations and marriages. BUT no trace of poor old John, apart from marriage record (in Herts) and entry on 1841 census. when he was of 'independent means'. Thanks. PJ |
