Why cant I find my Grandmother on the 1911 census?

I have discovered my grandmother was born in 1908, but cannot find any record of her in the 1911 census.

I know she was alive and still in this country, are some of the records lost?

Although the most probable cause is indeed mistranscription or maybe slight differences between what you believe should have been recorded as opposed to what was actually recorded there are many other possible reasons.

For example it is believed that quite a large number of people refused to complete the 1911 census form out of support for the Suffragette movement's "Votes for Women" campaign.

Personally I believe that the most versatile search form for the 1911 census is that of www.1911census.co.uk You can search for free and possibly identify the record there. You can then use that information to search again at the site you tried before.
