Hi Tess,

Many thanks for your reply. I have sent off for possible birth certs for John Mar 1854 Boston and Sarah Mar 1857 Leeds, to GRO, and see where that gets me. Will try to get to Halifax and Leeds this coming week to check for addresses and elec regs.
Thank you for all your previous help during a busy period for yourself.

Regards.

Jim :-)

Sorry Jim,
rather snowed under at the moment. It does look like daughter Dorothy was not married at the time of Sarah's death.
Might be worth checking elec regs. for 38, High street Brighouse, both before and after Sarah's death.

Perhaps someone else can help . I will get back to you when I can, but not likely to be very soon,

good luck,
Tess :-)

Hi Tess,

I have just got the Death Certificate for the Registration District of Calder back from GRO. It is the correct one. Sarah Ellen Newton died 1 Jan 1939 at 38 High Street, Brighouse, Yorks age 78 years. She is shown as the Widow of John Newton, a retired Railway Guard. Informant is shown as D. Newton, daughter, present at death 38 High St, Brighouse. So I have had some success. I still have to find her birth record as I unable to find a Sarah Ellen Taylor for 1861 census. For the 1871 census she is at Burley Bottom, Headingley, Leeds. I now know her husband John died before her but again I unable to find a death date for him with not knowing his birth date. Also I am unable to find out from the death cert if D. Newton [Dorothy] was married at that time. However as it shows her as D. Newton one must assume she has not married. After her mothers death there are quite a few Dorothy Newton's marriages in Leeds. Can you help me out anymore?

Regards
Jim :-)

Just Googled. Looks like Electoral Registers are kept in Leeds Central Library, Referance Section.
The Headrow, Leeds LS1 3Ab.

phone 0113-247-8290

Would be worth phoning before going there. If you can't go perhaps they will do a look up for you (for a small charge) Or perhaps a GR member living in Leeds area will do a look up for you.

Well worth checking on line info for the Library, they hold quite a bit of info. Including some b.m.d.
Perhaps they will give some clues for the Sarah Ellen death in Calder.

Good luck,
Tess

Hi Tess,

My next step is to send to GRO for the death certs for Sarah Ellen at Calder. I was trying to save money. Have just got the marriage cert from GRO for Dorothy to Flesher which proved to be wrong. How do you go about looking at the electoral registers for Knowle Road?

Regards

Jim

You beat me to it Jim, I thought that the death reg in Calder in 1938 might be thhat of Dorothy's mother. (Didn't notice the other one!).

Have you looked at elec. registers for 14, Knowle Road. ? Might tell you if family were there after 1918, though Dorothy wouldn't have been elligible to vote till after 1918.

may well be worth sending for death cert. of Sarah in Calder, if the right one you should have an address and an informant,

Tess

Hi Mike,

His bapt date is 15 Oct 1856 at Donington, Lincs. The GRO have been unable to come up with a birth cert for him after extended search. Therefore have to believe he was never registered under the name of Newton or Grundy. Donington-upon-Bain is a different place to Donington [New Holland]. The births of James Betts Newton and Rose Eleanor Newton are also erroneously shown as Donington-on-Bain. I have the certificates to prove this.

Jim

Hi Reggie,

Mostly Free BMD and FMP. Her father was a railway Passenger Guard so he could have settled down anywhere.

Trying to find out any information on Dorothy Newton born 4 Apr 1898, Leeds, West Yorkshire. Her parents were John Newton born 1856, Donington, Lincolnshire and Sarah Ellen Taylor born 1859, Burley, Headingley, Leeds, West Yorkshire. I know she was living with her parents at 14 Knowle Rd, Kirkstall, Leeds for the 1911 census age 12. I am trying to find out if she got married and if so to whom? I do know the 2 marriages in Leeds - Dec 1922 [Clifford S Ramsden] and Jun 1938 [Norman Flesher] were not her. I have been unable to find a death in the UK for her maiden name.
Regards
James
