Ozibird Report 18 May 2012 21:27

Her mother died in 1895 when she was abt 8, and she was with the Grays in 1901.

She married in Glanford Brigg, the district the Grays lived, rather than Hull where her family were still living in 1909.

You would have thought the elder daughter, Elizabeth/Lizzie, would have been able to look after her. I think you have a bit of a mystery on your hands.

I can't find any connection, James Gray was from Rawcliffe in Yorkshire and Alice Maria from Amcotts to the west of Scunthorpe. Neither place seems to have any connection to the Barrasses.

Thanks PricklyHolly.

I think I shall just leave her on my tree for now but put a note on saying she is more likely to be a close family friend than a relative.

Thank you both again for all your help. I have to go and get ready for work now but I will check this thread later.

All the best

Hi Ozibird

Mine is Eva Barrass and John Chrisropher Camm.

Thank you.

PricklyHolly that would be right. Her mother would still be alive in 1901 so she was just visiting the family. So at this point she is probably a family friend.

Thanks

Thank you PricklyHolly and Ozibird. I The information you have given me is a bit of a surprise.I didnt realise Eva was living with Jame and Alice Gray in the 1901 cenus. I wonder what the connection is between the Barrass family and the Grays

Please can you tell me how she is related to the Grays on the 1901.

PricklyHolly I have just found a death for Elizabeth Barrass. 1895 aged 44 which would be about right.

Thanks again ladies

Formal adoption wasn't introduced until 1927. So before then it was an arrangement often made by family, within family. Usually the word adopted was used on the census.

What proof have you that the Gray family 'adopted' her?

Thank you PricklyHolly and Ozibird. I will go through that information and see if I can find any reason for Eva to be adopted or for her to be living with the Gray family.

Please can someone look up Eva Barrass on the 1891 census. I do not know who here parents were. She was either Fostered or Adopted into my family at a later date. Sorry I cant find the year she was adopted.

Eva was born abt 1886 in Hull.
She married John Christopher Camm in 1909 (registered in Glanford Brigg)

Thanks for your help
