On 1891 census I am having difficulty reading full job title of Benjamin Hesse.

Ref no - RG12, Piece 1314, Folio 71, page 29. Benjamin Hesse 42 yrs, and living with mother Eliza Hesse 70 yrs. West Ham, Stratford, Middlesex.

Benjamin says he is a Cabinet Maker - followed by something else which I cannot decipher!!

Any clues??

Thanks

Marcus

I don't think it's Cornwall but looking at others they do state G.E. for Great Eastern Railway.

He's making fancy cabinets so I don't think it's for the railways. If that's line could it be for a shipping line?

JoonieCloonie Report 28 Jan 2015 16:45

it looks like just

small line

compare
the li_e to the 'n' in 'hand' on the line above
and
the _ine to the 'l' in 'loom' on the line above

what it would mean ... possibly that he made small goods, like jewelry boxes?

Small items might be tea caddies, ladies work boxes etc.

yes, those are the sorts of things I was thinking of, Andy

the only other item that came into my head after jewelry boxes was breadboxes, and I thought that was probably not 'fancy cabinet' work :-)

Thanks to you all. I'll gladly accept his job as 'Cabinet Maker - Small Line'. Sounds good to me!!

Why can't they just write clearly on these census forms??

Thanks again!!
