Barrie Report 1 Sep 2016 16:39

Above, my aunt, born 10.3 1882 St.Georges Shropshire moved to Handsworth, Birmingham, about 1892 still there 1901 and1911 unmarried. Married Samuel Joseph Wilson coffee planter,Bombay Cathedral 30.1.1925. How did she get there- nothing in Shipping Lists and India office cannot help. Did she see an advert in the paper for lady to marry a coffee planter. Lived in Bangalore area at Hoskhan (?) at least to 1936. Last remembered address Eventide Home Bangalore. How can I find where and when she died. She was very homesick in 1936 as remarked in a book she sent me for my 9th birthday. Probable contacts through Genes Reunited not responding. Barrie Cross

WILSON. Samuel Joseph WILSON, born in Bangalore (?) 1872, Sep 21. He
died in Bangalore in 1947, May. Samuel was a coffee grower and owned the
Kulhutty Coffee Estate in the Nilgiris Hills outside of Banglore,
Southern India. We believe the plantation is now called Manjushree
Plantations. Family lore has it that Samuel?s father came to India with
the British Army and that he was from Edinburgh, Scotland. This would
probably have been in the 1850/60s. Samuel had two other siblings ?
Margaret WILSON, who married Clifford George DENTON (Ada?s brother).
Margaret had a daughter Doris who married George SPENCE in Jamshedpur.
Samuel?s brother was Robert WILSON who had a daughter Jessie whose married
name was THOMPSON. For Samuel, I am looking to confirm his birth place
and parentage. I also want to confirm the British Army connection.

Edits (his first Marriage was to Ada Gertrude Denton, India, looks to tie in with info.on above about him)

Found departure London 1922 on ship to Australia not named. Entry is under Nellie. Not mentioned in official shipping lists. P&O did a service to Australia calling at Bombay at this time alternately with one to Bombay only.

Barrie Report 8 Oct 2018 08:58

Coincidence it is. I found another Nellie with father James in the same area of Birmingham. Handsworth was in registration of West Bromwich at this time. Could the Aberdeen company have had a regular service to Bombay and Australia with a departure nearer to the 1925 wedding date? Can't explain existance of trinket from P &O ship except that it was kept in a box containing other things Nellie could have sent. It was purported to have been given to her by the Captain of the ship.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 8 Oct 2018 11:26

What is the trinket, Barrie?

Does it have any sort of inscription - name of ship, for instance?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 8 Oct 2018 11:34

Have you tried contacting any Eventide Homes or similar in Bangalore, in case they have archives, or could tell you where archives might be held?

Chris posted a link earlier - though that seems to be for Catholic-run homes, and the marriage was in an Anglican church. ( Which may or may not matter.)

Also maybe the Eventide Home Association ??

PM from Barrie:

My Cousin's widow in Scotland says trinket is silver tortoise shell compact with " SS Arcadian" on it and thought it was the gift of the Captain. The Wilson family were quite extensive in the coffee planters numbers I've read. In the ranks of those people mentioned on the marriages mentioned on the marriage register of Bombay cathedral in 1925. Professors, army captains, accountants etc. Regards Barrie

ArgyllGran Report 8 Oct 2018 16:52

Barrie -

You mentioned P&O.

P&O didn't have an "Arcadian", but did have a couple of "Arcadia" s.
The first was built 1888, but I can't find any info about her.
The second was built 1953 - too late for Eleanor to have sailed on, if she was in an Eventide Home in 1936.

https://www.revolvy.com/page/SS-Arcadia

Re "Arcadian" specifically;
https://www.revolvy.com/page/SS-Arcadian

Was used for a time under another name, by the companies which later merged to become P&O. But was sunk in 1917.

If the compact did belong to Eleanor, maybe it was a gift from someone else who had sailed on the ship, rather than Eleanor herself.

If Eleanor was personally on "Arcadian" it must have been between 1911 and 1915, when the ship was taken over by the Admiralty for war purposes.
But the ship was RMS Arcadian at that time, not SS Arcadian (per the link above).

PM from Barrie today:

Hi. Sorry for delay in replying but have eventually unearthed photos with descriptions of the area presumably Bangalore. Not that they help in the way of getting there but a bit of background. Thank you so very much for your attempts to unravel the mystery but I think it must be lost for ever unless I can get the Wilson connections to reply.. Tried several ways in the past but no response through Genes Reunited.

Delighted to help, Barrie, and sorry we couldn't solve the puzzle for you.
Good luck!
