Roy Report 9 Jan 2017 06:17

I am just starting to compile a tree for my wife's mother, named above. She married James Douglas Hawkless in 5/12/1946 in Invercargill, New Zealand. Isabella was born in Invercargill on 7/7/1924
Her parents were Alexander Cheyne, born in Dunrossness, Shetland Isles, in 21/1/1875. Her mother was Isabella Thompson White, born 24/12/1883 in Palmerston, New Zealand.
Her grandfather on her mothers side was James White, born 7/8/1847 in Ans. Scotland, unsure what ANS is an abbreviation of, and grandmother was Isabella White born 1847, Ban, Scotland, again do not know what BAN is short for.
Her grandfather on her fathers side was Sinclair Cheyne, and grandmother was Catherine Goudie( Gaudie)

Any help would be appreciated or even pointing me in the right direction. As you can imagine doing Scottish research from New Zealand is not easy.

Thanks in advance

Roy Horwell

ANS, BAN are Chapman county codes for Angus (aka Forfarshire) and Banffshire.
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/Regions/Codes

Since the usual abbreviation for Banffshire is Banff, it can be awkward to know if a p.o.b. of Banff refers to the city or the county.
At least in your notes, you can use BAN to distinguish them.
This is particularly useful in Scotland. E.g., ABD, AYR, BAN, DFS, DNB, INV, KKD, NAI, PEE, PER, SEL, STI.

http://www.electricscotland.com/history/gazetteer/ has maps for every Scottish county showing parishes.
Dunrossness is the southernmost parish on Mainland - it also includes Fair Isle, and is the only parish S of 60deg lat.

You'll really need to buy some credits at SP to see BMD.certs, OPR entries and census images.

However, a useful free resource for Bs and Ms is:
https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list#page=1®ion=UNITED_KINGDOM_IRELAND

Here are some hits from FS:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XY79-THM

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F79K-N2N
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F79K-XHB
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQK4-1ZK
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQ4M-TZ6
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQR6-6YC
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQKH-CYY
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQ7S-82N

NB FS often doesn't distinguish between the calling of banns and the marr.

Scottish statutory BMDs give both parents of the subject(s), including the mum's M.S. (=maiden surname).
B.certs give the date and place of the parents' marr (except in the late 1850s).

Pre-1855, you'll need OPRs - for coverage, see:
https://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/research/guides/old-parish-registers/list-of-old-parish-registers
[from this, we learn Dunrossness is parish # 3]

http://www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
has censuses, but the coverage varies.
SHI 1841, BAN 1841-1861, ANS 1841 are complete, plus 32% of 1851 ANS.

FS's censuses are useless - you'll need Ancestry or FMP/GR to see 1841-1901 (1911 is via SP only)

Suppose I wish to limit my search of Bs or Ms to Dunrossness on FS.
I can limit this with a batch #.
The form is c11pppd for christenings, and m11pppd for marrs.
For Dunrossness, substiute its parish # for ppp (i.e., substiute 003)
The last digit is a date code.
For 1855 thru 1875-ish, the date code is d=1 - if there're too many, then d=3 is used for the newer ones.(This data is extracted from the GROS index).
The remaining numbers are used for pre-1855 OPRs, with the higher numbers for newer ones.
(For Dunrossness, only 2 and 4 are used)
[NB this fails for big cities, where there are just too many entries to fit this scheme].
