1922 Grimsby Directory has a J. Smith, marine engineer living at 369 Wellington Street.
----------------------------------

Not sure if this is related but on the 1939 register at 191 Stanley Street (Possibly coincidence as many Smiths in Stanley Street in the area directories):

Grengrass (Smith) Household (1 Person) 191 Stanley Street , Grimsby C.B., Lincolnshire (Parts of Lindsey), England

Olive Grengrass (Smith) 04 Aug 1904 Female Unpaid Domestic Duties Married.

(Olive Smith was living alone, listed as married, then married James W Greengrass in 1941)
-------------------------------------------

William H Carter, fisherman is listed at 191 Stanley Street in 1922 Grimsby directory.

Ellen Report 23 Dec 2017 01:40

I am back on the trail again for John Smith. Marriage Certificate 3/5/1922 aged 27 years arrived has as his father John Smith occupation Blacksmith ( Master).

I found on Scotlands people another John Smith born 4/5/1894 to John Smith (Fisherman) & Jeannie Smith ( they married 28/3/1885 at Rathven probably not them as occupation is different?

I do not think the John Smith who married Williamina West is ours as he had a daughter to Maud Elizabeth Carter in 1937.

Information previous was given by a Ancestry member

Try North Lincs Archives, Town Hall Grimsby. They carry a large number of records of fishermen working out of Grimsby.

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 22 Dec 2017 14:37

In Scotland woman are often referred to by their maiden names even when married.

There is a possible marriage in 1930 for John Smith to Williamina West in St. Nicholas. If correct it's unlikely to be your man if he was still having children with Maud- unless the younger children weren't his?

Where did you get the details of your John Smith from?

There are lots of closed records on the 1939 register so maybe his death hasn't been picked up

Maud gives her status as married

But there was 7 children. Two of which are opened so the 5 closed are likely the other 5

Buckie would appear to come under the Rathven RD. (Banffshire)

There are 6 John Smiths born 1896 +/- 2years showing on the 1901 census as born Buckie.

The Marriage certificate will help.

4 of the families have Father's with different forenames - John, (a Carter, son John 7) George (a boat Builder, son John 6), Alexander (a Carter, son John 3) and William (a Draper's Assistant, son John G 5). 2 have no Father at home.

Of those 2 with only the Mother showing -

Margaret is a widow in 1901 with Alexander 10 and John 7 and in 1891 looks to be recently married with a son Alexander aged 0 - but husband again away (a Fisherman)

The other, Elizabeth, a Fisherman's wife, shows as married in 1901 (son John 4) and is possibly with husband George in 1891

I am hoping someone might be able to help with this very common name SMITH

What I know is John Smith Married Maud Elizabeth Carter in 1922 at Grimsby Lincs
Their children are (1) John William 1923 (2) Malcolm 1924 (3) Roy A 1928 (4) Reginald G 1929 (5) Norman 1931 (6) Ronald 1933, (7) Christine Alma 1937.We have all of the information on the children & Maud Elizabeth.
What we now want to know is why & when did John Smith leave his family, I know he wasn't with them on the 1939 Register so guess it to be between 1937 & 1939.
All we have on John is possibly came from Buckie in Scotland & that he was a Fisherman born about 1896.
A copy of their marriage certificate has been ordered which will give us an idea on when he was born & who his father was.
Any further information on John will be greatly received
