Struggle Against Poverty

Annie Langsford of 242 Hospital Street summoned her husband Walter Wallace Langsford , at the Birmingham Police Court yesterday, for arrears under a maintenance order. In answer to the magistrates, the defendant said at present he was out of work, but was receiving 3s a week from the Salvation Army, which was also endeavoring toprocure him a situation. Out of that sum he gave his wife a shilling a week and lived on the remainder .

Mrs Langsford stated she had had thirteen children, ten of whom were alive and five of whom were under the age of 16.

Mr W L Powell (chairman) 'What do you do for a living?'- I am a hook and eye carder, and often sit up until three or four o'clock in the morning carding the hooks and eyes, but can't earn more than 4 shillings a week. It is very hard sir.

The Chairman- 'We are very sorry for you'

Mrs Langsford continuing her story said that at the present time time they had neither food nor fuel in the house. She had applied to both the parish and the City Aid Society, but had not been successful in obtaining assistance from either of those bodies.

Defendant offered to increase his payments to 1s 6d. a week while still out of work and when in better circumstances he would comply with the order.

The Magistrates sympathised with the woman, and hander her a sum of money, the Chairman saying it was a very sad case indeed.

So did he go to prison for failing to pay maintenance?

Thank you for the copy from the Birmingham Gazette. it is sad to see what had happened to Annie.

She had a sad life story. Her father owned two shops and was quite wealthy but her mother died at a young age and her father died the year she married. He left a will leaving all his children a share of his money. However I do not think any of the children received any money because of a scheming aunt. I know that my grandmother and another sister never had a penny or ever knew about the will.
