From Findmypast:-

Blown Through Manhole at Power Station.

A workman was so severely burned in an explosion at the Charing Cross Electricity Supply Works, St, Martin's Lane, W.C yesterday that his clothes fell off him and only his boots remained intact.

He was John Henry Lavers, aged 24 of King's Road, Willsden who was working in an underground chamber, near the manhole through which he was blown. He was removed to Charing Cross Hospital in a critical condition.

Immediately the explosion occurred the electricity supply to the Charing Cross neighbourhood was cut off and lights went out. The trouble was quickly rectified however.

"How the explosion occurred" an official said "is a mystery".

The above was in the Daily Herald, 10th April, 1929.

John was a twin born with my grandmother Phyllis.

Sadly he died in 1928 as a result of an electrical accident so I have been told.
My grandmother never spoke about it .

I would be interested to know what happened.

I do not have access to newspaper articles and wonder if anyone can help.

Thankyou
